New Restaurant: How Do You Roll?

How Do You Roll is a cool new restaurant concept in the build-your-own food model with locations throughout Austin and San Antonio (coming to Houston soon). What is build-your-own? Think Lego’s of healthy foods. We think this modular system offering a choice of singular whole food ingredients is a great way to ensure you are receiving tasty, simple food free of many of the additives. It is also easy for our clients to find compliant meals without having to embrace their inner Sally!

Word of caution for those that are sensitive to certain ingredients: There are gluten, soy and dairy containing marinades in most of the meat items and most of the sauces contain soy, citrus, eggs or gluten. However, the veggies and most fish are ready to roll!

How do you roll?
  • Step 1: Seaweed or Soy Paper? Brown or White Rice? Skip the soy! We recommend seaweed and brown rice over white.
  • Step 2: Choose 3 veggies: Delicious veggies offered including: asparagus, avocado, cucumber, spinach, sprouts and more. If you are going with a veggie roll, choose as many veggies as you wish and simply pay a small up charge of .50cents for each additional veggie.
  • Step 3: Choose fish or meat: Choose fish if you are concerned about inflammatory ingredients.
  • Step 4: Top it off with a sauce: Skip the sauces if you are concerned about inflammatory ingredients

Dining Out with Food Intolerances

Masses of people are becoming empowered by learning how to feel, give and live their best possible lives through the foods that they eat each day.

Once we have embodied these new states we can become addicted not to the foods that once held us captive but to those that captivate. Foods that create inflammation for our unique constitutions, whether sugar or carbs or an orange, tomato or gluten particle-are avoided like the plagues they induce within us.

For those of us that have discovered our unique triggers, dining out becomes an adventure fraught with both deflating and elating experiences. Victories abound upon discovering or visiting accommodating new haunts while unwanted impacts from an establishment that is not so accommodating could haunt our bodies for days.

A recent experience and numerous others throughout my life have sparked an inspiration.

How do we dine out while keeping ourselves happy, healthy and sane?

We are creating a forum, part selfish gratification and part tribal aggregation, as we share experiences with you, while requesting that you in kind, share yours with us. As individuals we must demand attention, but by joining together as a collective, we are able to command that which we deserve.

Stay tuned as we will be featuring chefs and restaurants that are conscious and even perhaps excited about the opportunities that exist to cater to an ever growing and more educated audience. We are a community who has discovered how to utilize foods to crash through our ceilings not just by avoiding, but by choosing wisely what we eat. And as these chefs will happily discover, we support those that support us - our faces joined by the faces of our families, friends and larger communities will become permanent fixtures in these businesses that embrace us.

One of our Favorite Downtown Dishes: The Garden Handroll

One of my favorite dishes in town is from Koriente. Fresh, tasty and dare I say “healthy” – but don’t hold that against it because this humble dish has lots of sass.

The Garden Handroll is a medley of colorful, raw veggies. Sliced and diced this crisp fusion is paired with wasabi, a jumbo avocado and nori roll papers. For a dollop of protein and some extra oomph, consider adding the hummus.
This hummus is citrus-free but doesn’t sacrifice the edge, welcome news for those Love Cleansers that have discovered citrus negatively impacts their day.

One final treat – requesting the nori papers roasted will cut the ocean taste and impart a rich, buttery flavor. Build each tidy roll exactly as you wish, roll it up, and voila! Prepare to be surprised by the punchiness of this simple meal.

On the health barometer – the Garden Handroll reels in at a 10! Besides the obvious benefits of the veggies, seaweed is rich in iodine and minerals, which are depleted in most of our diets due to top-soil erosion. These hard-to-acquire minerals play an enormous role in regulating mood, thyroid, hormones and overall happiness.

Enjoy!

First Installment of our Healthy Food Ambassador Column!

The Love Cleanse is excited to announce our Healthy Eating Ambassador
column!

Our Healthy Eating Ambassadors have gone through The Love Cleanse
program and are now hitting the streets with their health goals still in mind months and/or years later. They are feeling good and proud of it!

They wish to share their favorite healthy dishes around town. As they have discovered, eating healthy can still be fun; and you can still find healthier options at some of your favorite “non-healthy” eateries.

We're proud to introduce Dawn Thompson, our first Healthy Eating Ambassador, which is fitting as she was one of our earliest clients 2 years ago.

Dawn Thompson
Founder of Dawn Thompson Interiors, Mother of 2 and leader of her girl's pack

Read below to see how I was able to incorporate what I learned through the Love Cleanse to find menu items at local restaurants that are both delicious and work for me.

I discovered the following:
  • Shellfish makes me extremely tired.
  • Gluten creates inflammation and fatigue.
  • Eating nuts increases my cravings.
Here are some of my favorite dishes around town:

MANGIA PIZZA
  • They have a great Greek salad that I like to add grilled chicken to.

SANTA RITA CANTINA:
  • The Tilapia Pescado with black beans, salad, and guacamole
  • Rotisserie Chicken Entrée
  • A variety of fabulous salads!
  • Santa Rita has an array of delicious, healthy shrimp dishes but I never order because I’m intolerant to shellfish.
GALAXY CAFE
  • One of my favorites with so many options for me because they have an entire Gluten Free Menu featuring pasta dishes, sandwiches, wraps and even desserts!
  • I get the Tostado salad (which is actually a fantastic fresh salad), with chicken on top and black beans and one small Tostada on the bottom.

  • Their homemade Veggie/beet burger with a side salad is satisfying and tasty!

Cipollina's Nicoise Sala
CIPOLLINA
Some of my go-to dishes include:
  • Nicoise salad
  • Meditteranean Salad
  • Love their rotating fish specials too

   GUERO'S TACO BAR
  • The Grilled Veggie Alhambre is a huge plate of grilled vegetables with black beans, rice and I order Corn tortillas. Really good!

  • Misto Salad with grilled chicken - Delicious!
  • Also carry great shellfish items but again, these are NOT for me.

Click here for a map of all of the Love Cleanse Restaurant Partner locations in Austin.

Upon moving to Austin 12 years ago after a stint in San Francisco – I visited every Thai Restaurant in town searching for the authentic Thai Food by which I’d become spoiled.  10 years later the Thai Prima Donna in me was finally satiated with the opening of Thai Fresh!  Jam Sanitchat grew up in Thailand and began cooking with her Grandmother at age 5.   Authentic, fragrant curries, Pad Thai and Veggie Stir Fries are their specialties. They offer market style Thai Food available to dine in or take out.

During Phase 1 and the early parts of Phase 2 – Thai Fresh is your best bet!  If you are participating in the Concierge Program, we will deliver a cleanse compliant Thai Fresh stir-fry and citrus free hummus each day.  On the Self Pick up or TLC programs, you may order your own.

After Phase 2 Reintegration, branch out and try their most flavorful dishes like the Papaya Salad or Panang Curry.
